Stainless Steel for Ultrasonic Sensor Applications
Stainless steel (SS) is an attractive option as a metal due to its corrosion resistance when it comes to chemical processing. It also has a much wider working temperature range compared to thermoplastics (-195 C to 815 C). Unlike thermoplastics, stainless steel can easily be machined or welded to make modifications to an existing design. Stainless steel has a longer lifetime when compared to thermoplastics. Similar to Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF), stainless steel has a polished surface which doesn’t allow the collection of fungi, bacteria or other biological impurities making it suitable for food processing applications. Care should be taken to note the chloride content in the chemicals stainless steel is exposed to as it can compromise its corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is also well suited for applications that require high-temperature steam sterilization.
